Where Is Ismarus?
The first plunder of victory, the first lesson of the voyage
Fresh from Troy, Odysseus attacks Ismarus, city of the Cicones on the Thracian coast. The raid succeeds — but while his men linger over wine and feasting, the Cicones fetch their horse-riding neighbors and return. Six men are lost from every ship. It is the epic’s first lesson: greed sends a heavy bill.
One more thing is taken from this shore: an extraordinarily strong wine, the gift of Maron, priest of Apollo, whose family was spared. A few stops later, that same wine will put a one-eyed giant to sleep.
Where is it in the real world?
Ismarus is identified with the area around modern Maroneia on the Thracian coast of the northern Aegean, in Greece. The region was famous in antiquity for its strong wines, and the name Maroneia is said to descend from Maron, the priest of the epic.
What awaits you in the game?
