Where Is Thrinacia?

A herd not to be touched, a fleet becalmed, an oath broken

Thrinacia — stop 11 on the Odysseia map

Tiresias and Circe both said the same thing: do not touch the cattle of the sun god Helios. Contrary winds pin the ship on the island for a month; provisions run out, hunger sets in. The moment Odysseus walks off to pray, Eurylochus talks the men round: the finest cattle are slaughtered. The meat bellows on the spits; the flayed hides crawl.

When they finally put to sea, Zeus’s thunderbolt shatters the ship. Everyone dies but Odysseus. That is the fate Homer tells — but it is also possible never to land on this island at all.

Where is it in the real world?

Thrinacia is identified with Trinacria — “the three-caped” — the ancient name of Sicily. The three-cornered island still carries the legacy in the three-legged triskelion on its flag.
