Where Is Scheria, Land of the Phaeacians?
The palace where the epic is told, the last ship home
Poseidon’s final storm smashes the raft; Odysseus swims for two days and washes up naked and spent on the shore of Scheria. Princess Nausicaa, washing clothes at the river mouth, finds him and sends him to the palace. At King Alcinous’s table the blind bard Demodocus sings of Troy — and the guest’s face runs with tears.
Odysseus reveals himself and tells his nine-year adventure from the beginning: the most famous episodes of the Odyssey are, in fact, the story told at this table. The Phaeacians heap him with gifts and, on their uncanny ships, set him down sleeping on the shore of Ithaca.
Where is it in the real world?
Scheria has been identified with Corfu (Kerkyra) since antiquity. The coves of Paleokastritsa on the island’s west coast and the islet of Pontikonisi by the harbor — said to resemble a ship turned to stone — keep the tradition alive.
