Where Is the Laestrygonian Harbor?
A narrow cove, eleven ships, one way out
A harbor ringed by high cliffs, its mouth narrow, its water always still: Telepylus. Eleven ships anchor inside; wary Odysseus keeps his own vessel outside, behind the headland. At King Antiphates’ call the giant Laestrygonians swarm the cliffs — they crush the ships with boulders and spear the men like fish.
Of the six hundred who set out, a single ship survives: the one that waited outside. The bloodiest page of the epic hangs on nothing more than an anchoring decision.
Where is it in the real world?
Ancient tradition puts the Laestrygonians now in Sicily, now in Sardinia; the favorite modern candidate is Bonifacio at the southern tip of Corsica — a narrow fjord-like harbor walled by high limestone cliffs, strikingly close to the epic’s description.
What awaits you in the game?
The one great decision here is the anchorage: bringing the whole fleet into the sheltered cove is comfort, keeping ships outside is instinct. The wrong choice shows how numbers can melt away in a single night.
